  1. The author has a really compelling motivation to write this book being that he has seen first hand and experienced the harmful, negative effects that social media can have. He has seen the dark side of a tool that can have so many positive intentions. He stated some pretty specific points and examples from his experiences with JuicyCampus. He emphasizes the importance of teaching kids the significance and severity of the implications that social media can have.

  2. 1. I think his motivation for writing the book is needed especially as internet use increases and the age of the users decreases. As younger generations begin to use social media, many of the are unaware of the consequences their actions. He is writing a book that does not bore teenagers who read it or tell when what is write or wrong. Rather, he makes suggestions about what teenagers and young adults should know about social media and how their life could change in a matter of minutes.
    2. I think he touches on key points that everyone who uses social media, or the internet in general, should be aware of. When he discusses a person's permanent record, he is stating facts that many people would be ashamed to agree on. He talks about students being their worst enemies, which many people fail to think about. The main cause of a persons diminishing reputation is the person themselves. They are willing to put themselves and their lives on display for the entire world to see because they feel like its cool. I also think him addressing bullying is much needed because students hear about the implication in school, yet it does not stick with them. Many students need to have the consequences in writing until it sinks in but by that time it is already too late to change the decisions you made in you past.

  3. I believe that the authors motivation for creating this book is not to change what students and the media community do online, but only to inform and aware people about the dangers and repercussions of social media. The author wants for the audience to realize that everything is permanent on the Internet, and he says it is for us to decide whether or not the Internet is a dangerous or successful tool. I believe that his assertions in chapter 2 are correct and valuable. "there are no easy answers or quick fixes" and "technology has changed high school life" are both true remarks.

  4. 1. He has personal experience with the benefits as well as the negative impacts that social media can have. I think that this book well help better understand the impact of online actions.

    2. I believe that he is correct in stating that we, as students, are our own worst enemy. Once we put something out there you cannot take it off.

  5. Everything has a guide in life whether it is tangible like physical paper or intangible such as words. Even though the author had no real idea what he wanted to do with his life, he created a website, "JuicyCampus.com", which brought turmoil. Seeing his website spiraling out of control, his intentions for writing this book about social media was to reach the technological savvy adolescent who has grown up primarily with a computer. This book is needed to teach many how to use social media because your "permanent record" can be stained by the littlest joke or misinterpretation. High school has become harder do to the advancement of technology. Many are cyberbullied by posers who create facades to impress others or start difficult situations. Lastly, the Internet is young; however, it is rapidly growing at an exponential rate which no one can control.

  6. I really enjoyed the authors motivation to write this book. he establishes the fact that he isn't here to tell the reader that technology is bad and corrupting, but instead provides the reader the information to make the decision for themselves. my thoughts on the authors assertions in chapter one are that the points he makes are extremely relative. for example he states that although technology has changed high school in positive ways, it has also made a negative impact as well. for example, because of technology bullying is more prominent than it was in previous years. The author also brings to attention the fact that the mistakes you make on social media can follow you around forever because the internet captures them.

  7. The website that he created definitely was an omg moment because of everything that he went through with it. That is crazy but it made me think about what happened with Yik Yak when we were freshman. People are more powerful online than in person so him making this book to talk about the pros and cons basically of social media is smart.
I think that when the author talks about how high school students now have a permanent record on the internet following them it is very true. Everything we do stays on the internet and it stays with us forever. I also think that the author is very true in everything he is saying especially when it comes to not having common sense when thinking about what one is about to post. Most people don't think before they post and that is where they can run into trouble.

  8. 1. I believe that the author's motivation for writing this book was in order to inform, discuss, and educate today's youth as well as adults about the positives and negatives of social media. I think the author's motivation for writing this book are very noble and appropriate to the times. I think that this book will be a very useful tool to people everywhere. I think the author's motivation for writing this book was driven from their own positive and negative experiences with social media. The author's willingness to share his wisdom and experiences with the world is very generous in my opinion. I can't wait to read more and see all that this book has to offer.

    2. I believe the author's assertions in chapter one are all valid points. The author says that the solution to using social media is "educating yourself and becoming a conscious creator of content". The author also says its important to think "about how the content will reflect on you and how it might affect others". The author also points out that social media can be used for good and bad purposes. The author also asserts that the internet is always developing and changing rapidly, and we often get caught up in that. Overall, the author asserts the idea that social media and technology are very powerful tools.

  11. -The authors motivation for writing this book was to inform the common person to be careful about what they post online because anything they put out onto the web could have a much bigger outcome than was intended. Everything you put out has the potential to make or break your reputation. The author is attempting to make people think about the content that they put out online before they make a decision that could potentially haunt them for the rest of their lives.

    - social media has changed the way in which teachers teach curriculums and students gain knowledge. Also makes contacting others for help on a certain matter much more readily available to the common person. Also that kids these days who are raised around all of this social media can even be their own worst enemies, posting things without much thought to what it might do to their reputation down the line (everything online is permanent). Also an easy way to spread gossip, rumors, and lies about others around.

  12. I think that Ivester was really smart for publishing this book. I think it will be a good way to get a better understand of social media and the repercussions and perks that come with it. As teenagers, I feel like we don't fully understand the consequences of our actions when it comes to posting things on social media and that's why so many people get their feelings hurt on a daily basis because of this platform. I am totally into the author's motivation for writing the book.

What the author talks about in chapter 1 is similar to what I stated above; teenagers are very careless when it comes to social media. I didn't recognize it before but my generation really did grow up with social media all around us and we never learned the morals of how "what goes around comes around". One thing that I took away from this chapter was Ivester's goal of gaining more "conscious creators of content". By being these types of people, I think that social media can be a more laid back place rather than it being a platform to drag people. It's a hard goal, getting young people to understand and think twice about what they post, but I think it can be accomplished.

  13. I believe that his motivation for the book came to him after he realized the impact his website had on many of the college's and their students. I think his main goal is to reach high school students and inform them on the dangers of the internet before they post something they regret. For example when he asked the students if they had posted something online that they wish they hadn't, the majority said yes but by that point it was already too late. -Mikayla Boyd

  14. I believe the author in this book its really trying to share their past unpleasant experience and illustrate how nasty and unforgiving the internet can be. He discusses the creation of a website he created for college students which allowed for those students to share the gossip circulating throughout out his or her university. He did not realize at first what a disaster this could turn into since he believed that offline gossip was relatively harmless. He soon learned that he created a major issue and seemingly regretted his decision because the users of this online forum were becoming insensitive to the fact that what thy were posting caused greater problems than what they could have expected when they posted it. It was interesting to read a detailed explanation of how the internet actually affects us. Everything we do and say online will be there forever and will never go away. It is put on our "permanent record" and on display for future educators and possible future employers to observe. We need to learn ho to filter ourselves and limit our mistakes we so often make online.

  15. I think that the author's motivation for writing this book is to inform young adults about the consequences and benefits of posting certain things on social media platforms. I like how the author states that sharing about a romantic relationship or challenging their religious and political beliefs are all a part of growing up, but in this day and age kids are posting it on social media and it has come back to bite them when applying to college or when they try to find a job.

  16. I feel as if the author's motivations for writing the book is that he truly wants to teach his readers about the internet and how although what you do online may be virtual, the consequences are real. I feel that in chapter one, the author emphasizes things that people forget about the internet, like the fact that it is still young. The internet was developed and took off at such a fast pace that it did not take long for it to get out of hand also making it extremely hard to control

  17. I am grateful that Matt Ivester made this book because he helped share with the world all the answers to some of the questions he knew everyone had about social media. I am glad that Mr. Ivester has an understanding that high school in today's society is harder than what it used to be.

  18. Because social media has become one of the biggest phenomenons in the past ten years, it is important for people to be aware of the cautions and ins and outs behind their posts. I appreciate that Matt Ivester wrote an informational book to inform people about social media and the dangers that come along with it. Millennials today are usually the ones found in dangerous situations because of social media, which Iverston has evidently done lots of research on. His book provides caution to social media users that can be detrimental to their lives. As a teenager who is about to go off to college in the fall, I really appreciate Ivester’s cautionary book that will help educate me about platforms that I use everyday. Personally, I try to be very careful about what I post and send through social media, but this book help extend my knowledge.

The Preface focuses on Matt Ivester’s experience with his first “lol...OMG” moment. I found it interesting that Ivester decided to include the story of his flourishing website JuicyCampus.com. The website was an anonymous message board targeted to college campuses to gossip about professors or classmates at the school. Initially, Ivester thought that the website would be fun and would be harmless since people gossip in person as well. Though the website became extremely popular amongst youth, parents, administrators, and distressed students felt otherwise. I admire that Ivester owned such a flourishing website at the age of 24, but I don't feel that he carefully thought about the negativity that would come along with it and later crash. In chapter one, Ivester discusses the Internet and how it has had an effect on high school students over the years. He discusses one’s “permanent record” on the internet and the importance of having common sense over social media. I really enjoyed reading what Ivester had to say because it honestly did not feel like a boring lecture. I would definitely recommend for all millennials to read this relatable book to be informed and to stay safe.

  19. The author's motivation for writing this book is out of concern for future generations. He wants to help and prevent kids from making easily avoidable mistakes that could jeopardize their future on social media.

The author wants the reader to realize that there is not really a stat line for helping realize social media mistakes, but rather more of an intuition that goes along with being smart on social media. The author purpose is to guide young students along the right path of social media usage.

  20. I think that Matt Ivester's motivation for writing this book is very helpful. His cautionary approach to using social media makes a lot of sense. He talks about how reputation matters in society which is something that we as young kids don't think about often. Zi was surprised to read that Ivester created the biggest college gossip website and went to Duke University. Learning more about the people I support and the things I like is really changing my world view on things.

  21. 1. The author "encourages us to forge identities online that are consistent with our better selves, and to take a proactive stance on creating and monitoring our online image.” He wants to help students think about how they portray themselves online and how they treat others online. He wrote this book because of his own personal experience with an "lol....OMG! moment."
    2. He believes that there needs to be more focus on education high schoolers and college students about how to portray themselves online. They authors is really trying to help students and help increase the pros of the Internet and social media usage.

  22. I think the authors motivation to write this book was to help the younger generations have a guide in something that plays an important role in their lives. With social media being dominated by the youth, a book like this is crucial especially with minors being more naive and less wise as adults. In chapter one I like how Matt talks about how technology is changing the way that students are being taught in school. In the book the narrator also stresses how important educating people about technology is, because it has the potential to be life changing.

  23. I think the authors motivation for writing this book was to help the youth, and give them a guide. When writing this Matt was probably aware that social media was dominated by the youth and lacked the adult population. Without adult supervision children are more naive, and also more likely to make mistakes. In chapter one there were multiple things that I liked. I like how the narrator states that the initial goal of creating GeoCities was to empower individuals online. I also like how the narrator states that people should be educated on the responsibilities that come with technology.
